“Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else.” - Buddha

I often think about the connection between all things. Whether it be opposites, similarities or a symbiosis of two parts that work as one, what makes all those possibilities interesting questions is that they are not alone. Dualis, the Latin word for two, is the basis of this invitational show. Each artist was given the room to explore in their own style and genre of working in clay exploring the idea of two. In the small world we live, the subset of the clay community is an even significantly smaller group of people who deal with universal issues. This show spans not only different styles in ceramics but the avenues of pottery, sculpture and installation. I choose artists that in one way or another touched my own expanding artistic circle and I felt would have something unique to share. It is my hope the viewers of this exhibition will enjoy exploring the differences and similarities between each artists’ interpretation of this themed show. There are similarities between the intimacy that happens between Lorna Meaden’s salt and pepper pot, a seasoning duo that culturally has spent some time together, and the forced closeness of Maria Kretschmann’s installation. Kretschmann creates a powerful connection with the viewer through her porcelain arms that hold guns and become an extension of society’s hands taking a look at conjoined social issues of our humanity. While Meaden’s pieces create a sense of magnetism through a masterful use form and detail, combined with the communication between the two parts that create a new whole. By using similarities of working in multiples, Tim Clark’s organic shapes exhibit a new correlation between two pieces of clay on repeating pods of steel, while Stephanie Leach encapsulated her man made replicas of consumer goods in the glass containers. Exploring the differences between Miranda Howe’s work and Jill Oberman’s pieces is just as rewarding. While both artists work is on the wall and use the language of the geometric square, the intent and meaning of the works vary significantly from the fragility of relationships to the protective structures both architecturally and psychologically. It is my hope that the artists in this exhibition have begun to open the door for viewers to walk away with a new sense of connection the world around them as they continue to explore the dualities in their own lives.
