ARTIST STATEMENT

Clay is the connection to my childhood and means of communicating in a way I cannot do with words. My sculptural work is built from a playful, adventurous childhood and the unassuming confinements of adulthood.

My autobiographical work explores metaphorical symbols which are personal reminders of my past and how the presence of adulthood interacts with those memories. By creating my own metaphorical language using various objects, I build narratives through fantasy and play just as a child naturally would. The metaphor of the bird is used to represent myself. Balled bodies reference balance and the found objects denote materials of places I have been. Circles reference the cycle of nature, our habits, balance, life and death and an understanding that the circle connects all things. The lighted porcelain pieces evolved from the collections of bottles my dad collected contain building materials. Drawings of tools and objects that my father worked with are specific to particular memories I shared with my dad.

The ghosted objects depict the haziness that surround my memories. The metaphor of light and shadow represents the energy we have inside ourselves and the transference of that energy into the objects we use, collect and transform during our lives.
