Out of Water
40' Ground mural at CA Natural Resources Building highlighting the Chinook Salmon in crisis
About the Mural Project
Out of Water
The temporary mural "Out of Water" featuring the Chinook Salmon keystone species in crisis emphasizes our impact on this important species. Instead of water, a "river" made of pollution and debris flows top to bottom, symbolizing the environmental threats facing the species. The fractured river displays icons representing the various factors that have led to the crisis. As the rivers converge with the Chinook Salmon, the fish's body is encompassed by a keystone shape formed by pollution debris, portraying the impact of human activity. Within the keystone shape lies the symbol for infinity with an arrow, symbolizing hope that collective efforts can make a positive difference. The white background of the mural suggests that over time, it will weather and accumulate imprints, underscoring the ongoing impact on the Chinook Salmon. In the top right corner, a virtual animation allows visitors to engage with the mural, creating an interactive experience.
